Have your Cake and Eat it Too
September 23, 2008
For me, anyway, the word “pancake” usually evokes a decadent stack of carbohydrates patted with butter, drenched in syrup, topped with imitation fruit and/or whipped cream, and served up in mammoth portions by America’s favorite breakfast chain. As a health-conscious person-mind you, one who loves food!-I’ve learned to stay far, far away from such nutritional minefields. And the folks over at Montebello Kitchens have a solution for people like me: their buckwheat pancake mix makes the perfect treat while providing a wholesome start to your day.
You don’t have to search long for a comprehensive list of buckwheat’s health benefits; in fact, it contains eight essential amino acids, several crucial B vitamins, and 15% of the recommended daily fiber intake per cup. Buckwheat is believed to lower blood pressure, reduce unhealthy cholesterol and lower glucose levels (encouraging news for those managing diabetes). Granted, eating a cup of cooked buckwheat by itself doesn’t exactly sound tempting, which is why Montebello Kitchens has prepared a simple mix that, after the addition of an egg, some buttermilk and a little oil, transforms into a delicious and nourishing meal for the whole family. All of their mixes are freshly ground on a water-power mill to maximize both nutrition and flavor. Michelle Statham, Texas resident and loyal customer since 2005, comments, “Montebello Kitchens has some of the best products on the market. I like the Buckwheat pancake mix. Beside being very good, it is good for you. I like the fact that it is stone ground and fresh when I order it.”
Food Fight !
September 14, 2008
Some of the best emails and letters we have received come from parents who are thrilled because their child ate a healthy meal without a battle thanks to Montebello Kitchens. When Steven is creating new recipes he is extremely health conscious and wants to make sure that it is something that the whole family will enjoy.
For the family that has the son or daughter that must eat ketchup with EVERYTHING, Steven is your chef in shining apron! Normally a ketchup is loaded with preservatives, food coloring and high-fructose corn-syrup. TaDa! Meet our Curry Ketchup – no, it is not spicy and yes, it is delicious. There is one gram of sugar per serving, NO h-f.c-s., and we puree beets to give it its bright red color. Perfect for fish sticks, chicken tenders and french fries. (It is excellent for so many other grown-up foods like crab cakes, meatloaf, and bratwurst; but I am appealing to the younger crowd right now.) Make sure that you have a healthy Curry Ketchup in your refrigerator for your family all the time!
Sloppy Joe’s? Yay! Kids and grownups love Sloppy Joe’s for a dinner treat. Have you ever looked at the ingredients (aka: chemicals-in-a-can) and vow to serve it only once a year? Montebello Kitchens will make you the coolest mom or dad because now you can make this fun meal without the guilt. “How?” you say? Bring home our Virginia Barbecue Sauce and mix it in with browned ground beef and diced onions for a delicious Sloppy Joe. That’s it! There is less than one gram of sugar because we sweeten our barbecue sauce with apple butter. In fact, every ingredient is all-natural or organic in everything that we make. (For those who are looking for a vegetarian option, we do the same thing with Boca Crumbles or another meatless substitute.)
Kids not eating enough fruit? Try a fruit trifle with our Lavender Dressing. Put mixed berries and/or chopped fruit in a bowl and toss it with a little of the Lavender Dressing. Next mix in some vanilla yogurt and you have a delicious yet healthy dessert. If you want to snazz it up a bit, take a tall glass and alternate the layers of fruit with yogurt and crumbled cake or cookies . Yum!
These recipes are great ammunition to help you win the Food Fight!
