2010 Scovie Awards Recognizes Montebello Kitchens For Product Excellence Chipotle Ketchup with Agave Nectar Wins Silver Medal

January 25, 2010

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Montebello Kitchens, a Virginia’s Finest company producing artisan Virginia foods, has received the Silver Medal 2010 Scovie Award.  In the industry’s most rigorous blind tastings, a panel of the country’s top culinary experts sampled hundreds of the world’s most lauded gourmet foods, and the top scoring products each won a coveted Scovie banner..  When the results of the 2010 Scovie Awards, the world’s leading recognition for hot and spicy products, were announced, Steven Lynch of Montebello Kitchens was excited to get the call from the competition organizers.  “We are extremely excited and grateful.” Said Steven Lynch “The Chipotle Ketchup is our newest condiment.  This is the first time we have entered the Scovie Awards and the fact that we got a Silver medal on our first time out says a lot about the quality of our Chipotle Ketchup.  We are very honored to receive this award and excited that the judges loved our premium Chipotle Ketchup just as much as we enjoy creating and making it.”  Over 800 products from around the world competed for top honors.

“This year’s entrants really represented the cream of the crop in fiery foods products,” notes Dave DeWitt, dubbed by The New York Times as the “Pope of Peppers.”  DeWitt was pleased with the geographic diversity of the winners.  “This year, our winners represent companies from 32 different states and countries and provinces as diverse as Panama, Australia, Japan, Antigua and Canada,” lauds DeWitt.  “Scovie winners truly exemplify the diversity and quality of this industry.”

“What makes our ketchup unique is that we use organic agave nectar to sweeten our ketchup. “ Says Steven The inclusion of agave nectar as a sweetener exemplifies Montebello Kitchens’ commitment to offering consumers the healthiest products possible.  In fact, Agave Nectar’s Glycemic Index value is at least three times lower than table sugar, meaning that it does not produce the extreme energy highs and lows commonly attributed to sugar rushes.  Therefore the Chipotle Ketchup, like other Montebello Kitchens condiments, is a good alternative to traditional condiments for diabetics or those with other dietary restrictions.  Dr. Oz, professor of surgery at Columbia University and former health expert featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, says he prefers agave as a sugar substitute over all other sweeteners.

Owner Steven Lynch calls on his Virginia heritage to create and purvey his specialty foods, all of which reflect the vibrant history and traditions of Virginia.  The company prides itself not only on offering products of the finest quality and highest nutritional content, but also in giving back to the community.  “We believe in shared obligations,” says Lynch, “to customers, to vendors, to employees and to our community.  As a family business, we believe that integrity, hard work, and good will pay off in satisfied customers.  We strive to be a friend to the environment and the community through responsible business practices, donations, volunteerism, and community memberships.  Also, the company has partnered with WorkSource Enterprises, a Charlottesville-area 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to providing job training, as well as employment opportunities, to area residents with disabilities in effort to promote greater levels of self-sufficiency.

The new Chipotle Ketchup with agave nectar is now available at Foods of All Nations, and The Virginia Company in Charlottesville, at Whole Foods stores in the Mid-Atlantic region, at MOMS Organic Market stores in the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC area, at Pete’s Frootique in Halifax, Bedford Nova Scotia, and at many other health and gourmet retailers.
