The Legend (and Recipe) of Marie Rose
July 19, 2011
On July 19, 1545, the famous Tudor warship the Mary Rose sank off the coast of England during the Battle of Solent. It was a tragedy—nearly all of the 400 crewmen went down along the ship. The sinking of such a famous and battle-tested vessel fascinated the British for years. In the early 1970s, an expedition was planned to salvage the ship. On October 11, 1982, the ship was above water for the first time since 1545. Today, you can see the display and museum in Portsmouth, UK.
So just why does this ship wreck matter to fans of Montebello Kitchens? Without this wreck and subsequent discovery, we’d be without Marie Rose sauce. In 1981, the British Royal Navy brought the remnants of the Mary Rose to the surface. During the hard word, a Royal Navy chef was on hand to provide food for the workers. Unfortunately, one day that chef realized he didn’t have sauce to accompany the prawns be cooked up for dinner. Like the best chefs, he needed to improvise and made a discovery. He mixed ketchup, mayonnaise, Worcester sauce, and salt. He called the concoction Mary Rose Sauce. Over the next decade or so a strange trend took over the culinary world—things were given a French name to make them sound more exotic or fancy. So perhaps you’ve heard of Marie Rose Sauce? And you’ve definitely tasted the more complex version known as Thousand Island Dressing.
Now, there are lots of stories out there about similar sauces that came about in the mid-twentieth century. Perhaps it really was discovered long before that navy chef. But whatever the case, this story has become part of food lore. And, even better, it’s become part of our cuisine. Marie Rose Sauce perfectly compliments shrimp salad. You can try it as a dressing on a regular salad or as a veggie dip.
Now that you the know you can impress your friends with your knowledge when you also impress them with this easy recipe.
