Peanuts for Life

September 13, 2011

When I first met my wife, I had a limited palette. I mainly ate things like meat, potatoes, and candy—sad, but true. It wasn’t that I disliked good food but that I never had the chance to try anything new or different. Since then, she’s introduced me to a myriad of ethnic foods and plenty good ole American favorites as well. Now, there are still plenty of times when I shy away from the foods she likes—seaweed? But, just as often, whenever I seek to satisfy my craving for fast food, she always skips the trip to Five Guys. However, we both love peanuts. And, since this is National Peanut Day, it seemed only apt to write about. Both of us are peanut nuts—and no, that’s not a bad pun; peanuts are legumes, not nuts.

We tend to love every product made with peanuts as well. She likes organic peanut butter; I prefer creamy. She likes the roasted peanuts; I like cocktail peanuts. We both love any thai food lathered in a peanut sauce. And, I don’t think we’ve ever not had a jar or can of some kind of peanuts with us at both work and home.

Okay—convinced that we like peanuts?

But there’s more to it than just that. Peanuts are one of those health foods that we can share together, which in turn helps ensure we spend even more time with each other. I’m not just talking about the times we cook Indonesian chicken together. I’m talking about years from now, when we look back and are thankful we ate healthy food.

Cholesterol? We don’t need to worry about that with peanuts. They’re naturally cholesterol-free. In fact, peanuts and peanut butter contain over 30 essential nutrients and phytonutriens. Plus, they have a more antioxidants than grapes, green tea, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, and carrots.

And, Montebello Kitchens has no shortage of peanut-related products. Peanut Flour is loaded with fiber and protein—this is the perfect ingredient to use after we take a nice hike through Central Virginia on a sunny fall Saturday. And, what better way to follow that up than with a Sunday spent watching NFL football and a nice bowl or warm soup? MK has three different kinds of peanut soup: Traditional Virginian Peanut Soup Mix, African Piri Piri Peanut Soup Mix, and Thai Curry Peanut Soup Mix. Finally, there is the Bang Bang Peanut Ginger Sauce. Now we can have that Thai-flavor without ever leaving the house.

So on this National Peanut Day, take a moment to appreciate the peanut—not just what the delicious taste has done in your mouth, but what they do for your body as well.
